Arlington County May Vote to Make Car-Sharing Permanent: Figure 1

At its monthly meeting next weekend, the Arlington County Board is expected to vote to amend the county code to make car-sharing systems a permanent fixture in the county.

The vote would alter the language of the code to allow for both “free-floating” and “reserved-space” car-share programs in Arlington County, as well as adding language governing their use. Free-floating car-shares are those like car2go which allow service cars to share spaces with regular vehicles and also allow for one-way trips. Reserved-space car shares mandate vehicular trips that start and end at designated locations.

Arlington authorized car2go on a trial basis last October, extending the trial to a year last December and expanding into cross-jurisdictional service with DC in late May. Zipcar and Enterprise Carshare have been operating in the county since 2004 and 2012, respectively.
