ANC Committee Supports Logan Circle Coffeshop's Bid For a Parklet: Figure 1

DDOT wants to work with neighborhoods around DC to create small parks in what would otherwise be parking spots, and the owners of Logan Circle coffeeshop Slipstream would like to be involved.

The city’s pilot parklet program would place miniature parks the size of a parking spot in the parking lane of streets around the city. Last week, the owners of Slipstream, located at 1333 14th Street NW (map), received support from the ANC 2F Community Development Committee for the general concept of a parklet to be located in front of the coffeeshop. UrbanTurf has contacted Slipstream owner Ryan Fleming for more details regarding the planned mini-park.

Parklets can only be located in metered spaces and can not be on streets where the speed limit exceeds 25 mph. Eligible organizations and companies include business improvement districts, non-profits, and ground-floor or fronting property owners.

Last September, parklets popped up around the city as part of PARK Day, the stated mission of which is to “call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat.”
