A Look Inside Brookland’s Monroe Street Market

On Monday, UrbanTurf took a look inside Monroe Street Market, whose first apartment building, Brookland Works, is currently welcoming move-ins.

Brookland Works, located at 716 Monroe Street NE (map), has a total of 152 apartments, with 26 set aside as artist studios. Amenities include a gym, conference area, urban mountain lodge-style lobby, and art room.

In addition to the apartment buildings, Monroe Street Market has opened up their retail destination. The Art Walk is a pedestrian walkway lined with small shops intended to be filled with artisans and small boutiques; 20 of the 27 spaces have been leased, and workers seemed busy painting, scrubbing windows and moving in goods on Monday. The strip has an organic, artsy feel. Barnes and Noble, Potbelly, &Pizza, and a restaurant from the owners of Meridian Pint will also be moving in.

To kick off the placemaking development, developers Bozzuto will be hosting a festival, “Art in the Mix,” on October 26th in collaboration with Cultural DC. Street-style photographer Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist, will be attending to talk about his newest book and hold a book signing, and attendees can sample food trucks, art stands, music performances and a beer garden.

The Cornerstone and Portland Flats will both be opening up in the next three months, bringing the total number of apartments delivered at the project to 562. Check out the photos below.

    These are very attractive apartments.  I saw them this past Saturday as part of the Coalition for Smarter Growth’s Brookland walking tour.  This developmented reminds me a bit of Bethesda Row.

    Bozzuto is a complete nightmare to rent from.  If you need to cancel your lease early, they make absolutely no effort to re-rent your place early, despite how much notice you give them.  They are also unresponsive to complaints about next door neighbors that routinely smoke in their apartment.  Would NOT recommend renting from Bozzuto.  I speak from experience having rented atBethesda Row.

    These “art-themed” developments always make me cringe. I’m glad that I grew up in a place that had the cultural roots to actually support the arts because if THIS is what my young self were to see as artistic lifestyle, I would have just gone into I.T. I’m sure the developers mean well, but this is about as far from an artist-friendly as a Walmart.  The cost of living blows. There’s terrible access to clientele. There’s no way whatsoever to meaningfully modify the surroundings.  There’s nothing here to suggest that this will EVER be a good place for artists to be. Providing a bit of studio space in Brookland is going to be about as effective as throwing seeds onto pavement. Nothing will grow.

    I have heard much of the same….why does Bozzuto have a monopoly on much of the new rentals/condos that are built? They seem awful. I live near ‘The Row’, and am hoping the quality of Monroe Street market is higher, no offense.  Does not seem like they put much quality or spent much on materials for RIA. Saw the place built from the ground up: wood base, drywall, then aluminum siding. yikes.
