A Little Pool With Your Living Room?

by Mark Wellborn

As home amenities go, pools are not that uncommon. However, in Manhattan, one would be hard pressed to find this feature attached to a private residence. And a swimming pool located in the living room is down right unique.

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted a townhouse listed for $10.955 million in Chelsea that has a pool in the living room. The 30,000-gallon, 8-foot deep pool was built in 1975, and was inherited by Evelyn McMurray Van-Zeller in 1995 after her brother passed away.

Despite the problems associated with upkeep and what we imagine is a constant hazard (i.e. guests or residents missing a step at breakfast and getting soaked), the current owner told The Wall Street Journal that she and her pets have enjoyed the pool:

“While pool maintenance may be a drag, Ms. McMurray Van-Zeller says she and her animals thoroughly enjoy the amenity. Her three turtles and 5-pound Yorkshire terrier sometimes go for a dip.”

232 West 15th Street was originally listed for sale in 2008 for $11.5 million and has been on and off the market ever since.
